Project title: Analytical applications of bionanomaterials for water purification, sensors and biomedical devices
Nicolau’s Laboratory is directed towards the fundamental understanding of the interplay between nanomaterials and biomacromolecules for applications in water purification, biomedical devices and sensors. Analytical tools employed include: mass spectrometric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC-ITC), rheological measurements, high-resolution ultrasonic spectroscopy (HR-US), microscopy (AFM, SEM, TEM), Zeta potential and other spectroscopic techniques. Students from Nicolau’s laboratory are expected to engage at the cross field between chemistry and biology with emphasis in quantitative assessment of proposed systems: Water purification: synthesis and characterization of nano-based reactive membranes for degradation of contaminants. Biomedical: bionanocomposites for bone tissue engineering and repair. Sensors: development of methodology for quantitave sensing of emerging contaminants and metabolites
